Oxtail Without the Ox...Yuh Dun Know!
Interesting concept right? Yea, I was quite intrigued when I heard it myself.
So I learned of B.A.D. Gyal Vegan back when it was a small restaurant on Fulton by Franklin Avenue. It’s a completely vegan Caribbean menu. Until this, I didn't even know this was something I needed. I haven’t eaten oxtails in years and its partially because I’m pescatarian. Honestly, oxtail has never been my Caribbean dish of choice. I was more of a jerk chicken and curry goat type of person. Anyway, I’ve dived into the voxtail before and the ackee spring rolls. This time around I purchased the voxtail and the skrimp. The skrimp was surprisingly good… like way too close to real shrimp. I can’t wrap my head around how this all works! The breading and texture wasn’t too far off and good enough to feed to your favorite pescatarian. The voxtails are always good along with the cabbage and plantains. Quite on the pricier side but I get that we’re paying for quality and hard work.
Also, the ackee spring rolls are good too. This place makes me happy to know how far we’ve come in culinary skills to create such great dishes even amongst different cultures. There’s literally no excuse to not be able to accommodate everyone’s preference and/or dietary restrictions.
